The PGA Tour regular season is heading to an exciting conclusion, as this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic 2022 marks the penultimate tournament of the 2021-22 campaign. Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith shared the first-round lead at 8 under 64 after the opening round, but Pendrith took the lead in round two and leads the weekend.

A number of players have to make the trip north to Detroit with the aspiration of securing their place before the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Former US Open and Players Championship winner Webb Simpson is in the enviable position of being the last man right now, as he sits 125th in the single-season race. After playing sparingly in the spring due to injury, Simpson will try to climb the standings over the next two weeks in order to play Memphis for the first event of the playoffs.

While Simpson is just inside the threshold, other notables need a quick end to their seasons including Jason Day (#127), Rickie Fowler (#132), Cameron Champ (#149 ) and Harris English (#194). They all hope to follow in the footsteps of Scott Piercy, who jumped from 138th to 112th place with his top five finish at the 3M Open last week.

Piercy has proven that just four good days of play can turn his season around and provide a sense of security when it comes to future job prospects. The 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic will provide great theater for players looking to position themselves for the Tour Championship and those simply hoping to finish in the top 125.
