Basketball: the Blue Devils fall at the opening of the tournament

FOLSOM – Three points separated the Davis High girls’ basketball team from the Vista del Lago team in their opener at the Folsom-Vista Classic.

But the Eagles moved away from the Blue Devils in the second half. This led Vista del Lago to a 54-41 victory over Davis (1-4) at Folsom High on Thursday.

The loss knocked Davis down into the losers category. On Friday, the Blue Devils will face North of Torrance, who lost 55-25 to Oak Ridge in the other bracket game, at 5:30 pm.

The winner of the Davis-North game would play for the consolation title on Saturday at 11:30 am The loser of the same game would play for seventh place also on Saturday at 10 am. All matches would be played at Folsom High.

Vista del Lago (5-0) held a 31-25 lead midway through the third quarter. Davis then reduced his lead to 31-28 on a three-point play at 3:31. Blue Devil forward Mara Bledsoe, who was the team’s top scorer with 13 points, suffered a foul as she scored a bucket inside the paint with 3:31 left to play in the quarter. Heading towards the free throw line, she sank the shot to reduce the Eagles’ lead.

“It was a very close game,” said Davis head coach Heather Highshoe. “I was happy with the way we played the first quarter and a half.”

Davis led most of the first half at 6-3 with 2:32 left in the first quarter, 12-10 at 5:50 in the second and 14-12 at 4:14 in the same quarter. Then Vista del Lago cross Kira Sadler caught fire on the pitch, scoring seven of his game-high 23 points.

Back in the third quarter, the Blue Devils would face the Eagles for the remainder of the game.

For the remainder of the quarter, the Eagles forced the Blue Devils to make several turnovers. Toss in a 3-pointer from Vista del Lago’s Ella Skrzyniarz late in the quarter, and the Eagles took a 42-28 lead.

“Then our turnovers really hurt us,” Highshoe said. “All the teams that we have faced lately, they are capitalizing on it. Either they cut everything or they take the biggest lead, which hurts us. Our turnover, at the moment, is really damaging us.

Vista del Lago continued to strengthen their lead over Davis in the opening minute and 43 seconds of the final quarter. The Eagles defense continued to harass the Blue Devil players at midfield and inside the paint to force additional turnovers. That rose to more points for Vista del Lago, who led 50-30 at 6:17 in the game.

“I think our transition defense and half court rotations were a little slow at times tonight,” Highshoe said. “These are things we’ve talked about before; we talked about transition defense, we talked about valuing the ball and rebounding.

Davis moved the ball among his starters in Bledsoe, goalkeepers Malia Abrenica and Kate Nelson, and top players Tessa Schouten and Alia Cordone, both in sophomores.

Schouten was next to score for Davis behind Bledsoe with nine points. Cordone followed with eight, Abrenica seven and Nelson four.

Sadler scored 16 points in the second half for the Eagles. Skrzyniarz and her Eagle teammate Charlize Cai and Sofia Lendahl scored nine points each.

After competing in the Folsom-Vista Classic this weekend, Davis will play Whitney in a non-championship game at the Wildcats gymnasium in Rocklin on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
