Black-owned gaming collective Cxmmunity Media launches third season of the HBCU Esports League, continuing its mission toward lasting diversity in gaming
New Season Kicks with Discover, Verizon and Nestlé Hot Pockets as sponsors to promote inclusivity in the gaming industry
ATLANTE, September 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Community Media, a Black-owned organization dedicated to sustaining minority representation and fairness in the gaming industry, announces the third season of its HBCU Esports League. The new season starts on Tuesday, September 13 and invites teams of promising students from 16 historically black colleges and universities to compete in an NBA series 2K Games. The top two teams will advance to the “Discover Bowl” final presented by Discover, for a chance to win a cash prize of $20,000.
Verizonthe first Founding Brand Partner of the HBCU Esports League, will return this year as title sponsor for the upcoming season with Nestle HOT POCKETS®an essential snack for all gamers, making its inaugural debut.
The third season of the HBCU Esports League will air on Twitch.tv/cxmmunity starting at September 13, 2022at 6:00 PM EST and run for 22 weeks.
Despite the fact that 83% of black teens identify as gamers, black professionals are vastly underrepresented in the gaming category, making up just 4% of the industry. The HBCU Esports League, one of the few black-owned sports leagues, is working to change this statistic by providing a unique opportunity to build fairness in the game through this platform to enable black colleges and students to gain visibility and resources to monetize esports. This upcoming series of games follows the momentum and success of HBCU Esports’ second season which concluded in May and garnered celebrity attention and participation from rapper T-Pain, actor Brett Grayprofessional soccer champion mike evans and more.
