Edwards and Goerke named top players of the week

SIOUX FALLS, SD – South Dakota Softball Players Clara Edwards and Bela Gorke were named Summit League Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, after the first week of play. Both made their Coyote debuts and led USD to a 4-1 record in a tournament on last weekend in Huntsville, Texas.

Edwards, a freshman from Clay Center, Kansas, pitched in all five games totaling 19 1/3 innings of work. She did not allow an earned run during this period and only 12 hits including 10 singles. She threw a four-hit shutout against Houston Baptist in her college debut and closed with a five-for-25 shutout.and-classified Wichita State. She won two games, saved another and struck out 15.

At plate, Edwards reached base nine times in 15 plate appearances for a .600 on-base percentage. She had an RBI single, walked six and was hit twice during the tournament.

Goerke, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., who played at the Grand Canyon last year, hit her first home run of the season and three times in her first 13 plate appearances. All three home runs broke the tie scores. She made 10 runs, eighth nationally, on opening weekend, and defensively knocked out two of five potential base stealers.

South Dakota returns to the field Friday in Greenville, South Carolina, for a tournament hosted by Furman University.
