Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Comes To VR

Looks like the remastered GTA trilogy isn’t the only thing Rockstar has prepared for its classic Grand Theft Auto games. During Thursday’s Facebook Connect livestream, Mark Zuckerberg announced that San Andreas is getting a virtual reality makeover. “This new take on what I believe is one of the greatest games ever made will offer players a whole new way to experience this iconic open world in virtual reality,” Zuckerberg said.

The Oculus Blog Calls it a “many years in the works” project, but doesn’t have any screenshots or video of San Andreas in action. For now, we just have to use our imaginations.

This is the first time that a Grand Theft Auto game has been officially developed for virtual reality, although it is not a complete first. Earlier this year, modders made all of Red Dead Redemption 2 playable in VR, and you can make GTA 5 work in VR as well, if you want to play that way. Of course, neither of the two games were really made for VR, and neither was San Andreas, but with a new version in development for the Oculus Quest 2, it’ll likely be a more personalized experience.

How San Andreas will be reworked is an interesting question. First person? Motion controls? You’ll find out more when we do.
