LAFAYETTE WEST, IN – The Northern Illinois University men’s golf team finished 11th at the Purdue Fall Invitational at Kampen Golf Course, which ended Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies battled rain in the second round on Monday resulting in a round suspension that was called off this morning.

“We encountered all kinds of different weather conditions throughout the tournament,” the head coach said. Tommy dunsire was the Huskies’ best player in the tournament, tied for 31st with a score of 54 holes of five over par 221. Dunsire netted a one under par 71 Monday morning with four birdies. He finished his second round Tuesday with a 77. On Tuesday afternoon, Dunsire played his last six holes two-under to sign a final round 73.

Ben Sluzas (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) also won a final round 73 on Tuesday to finish tied for 41st at eight above par. The freshman opened the tournament with an under-71 average on Monday morning. Zach Square (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) got the Huskies’ weakest round in the second round with a par 75 of three. He followed that on Tuesday afternoon with a 74 of two to end the tournament tied at 45e at +10. Luke Warnock (Windsor, Ontario, Canada / EJ Lajeunesse) also finished 45e at 10 above par. The junior improved with every round, dropping from 79 in the first round to 76 in the second round and a final round 71 on Tuesday.

“The guys really finished today’s round strong,” said Carlson. “We were five under par on our last four holes and that is a testament to the mentality of our players, the grind and the level of talent we currently have at NIU Golf. NIU was in seventh place after Monday’s opening round, in which the Huskies posted a team score of eight over par 296. The Huskies then fell to 11.e after a 306 second round. Tuesday’s final round was the best of the week for NIU, posting a team score of three over par 291. The Huskies finished at +29 as a team, three strokes behind Minnesota for 10e place. Indiana won the event with one stroke over host Boilermakers.

NIU is next in action October 18-19 at the Xavier Invitational, hosted by Xavier at the Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
