Ms. Marvel herself talks about Kamala Khan being a mutant in the MCU!
Comic book accuracy has been a hot topic lately for DC Comics and Marvel through their various cinematic universes. For the Ms. Marvel series that just wrapped up its first season, that accuracy…was a bit mixed, especially with her power. However, in the season finale, they made an even bigger change to the lore. Kamala Khan… is a mutant. Complete with the X-Men cartoon theme song riff.
This is a big deal in many ways, as it finally helps set up the X-Men entering the MCU. But naturally, everyone wanted to know what Ms. Marvel herself, Iman Vellani, had to say about it. So… in a Reddit AMA, she flipped the wick:
“Don’t get me wrong, I love Inhumans. Black Bolt is my father. But I think the MCU is in a very different place than the comics, and so we were able to go that route with Kamala, and, to be fair, the original intention of the comic book character was to make her a mutant, so I’m thrilled that this is real and that we can make it happen,” Vellani revealed. “Sana Amanat and I were freaking out; every brain cell exploded when we found out we could do it. I was literally refreshing the Episode 6 thread here until someone finally mentioned it.
This further shows that Iman was meant to be Kamala as she is in tune with the lore and character history in the comics, but she is also open to key changes:
“Honestly, I’m so glad we went this route,” the actress continued. “I’m a huge fan of the X-Men and what an incredible honor to be the first official mutant in the MCU!!! That was the original intention of the comic book character anyway.
So yes, she’s a mutant, but when the other mutants show up…? We will have to wait and see.
