World Games announce venues for Birmingham venues

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – The 2022 World Games have announced the location of the venues for the international sporting event held in the Birmingham metropolitan area.

The historic event will kick off on July 7, 2022 and bring together over 3,000 athletes from around the world to the Birmingham area. The sites of the 34 sports competitions have been revealed.

You’ll recognize some names, including Railroad Park, Sloss Furnace, Oak Mountain State Park, Legion Field, and the Birmingham Complex.

Organizers also added some of the city’s newest facilities to the venues list after the sporting event was delayed by the pandemic.

“Protective Stadium, so we’ll be moving the opening and closing ceremonies to the new pitch,” said Jay Kasten, COO of The World Games. “CityWalk will be available. It will be for fan interaction, demonstrations, concerts. “

Organizers said the venues were chosen based on its ability to host sporting events, but also to showcase the best of Alabama.

The World Games are expected to create an economic impact of $ 240 million in the Birmingham area in hopes of preparing the city to host other large-scale sporting events.

With less than a year to go, organizers are spending time taking guided tours at each site and getting ready to kick off volunteer registration on October 1.

“The volunteers are the ones who really run the games. They make games what they are and make them special to the community, ”Kasten said.
